20 Aug 2003 - Nicko - Denver
In me hotel room - Denver.
Well, well, well,
I know that I have been late with the old diary over the last month or so but hey I’m trying OK.
That out of the way. ‘What’s up’?
Who said that? Not me John. Well I did didn’t I? Yes you may think that I have completely lost me noggin and you could be right, but I have been in Denver for the last couple of days and I have to say there is a distinct lack of ‘Kin oxygen in this part of the world. Hence the Denver madness could be creeping in who knows.
Oh yes I was going to tell you a wee bit about our travels on the Maiden express. Well we got a new airplane after Chicago it’s a Metro Liner. It has a very small interior and is shaped like a cigar. It’s very noisy and doesn’t go to fast, but hey, who’s complaining? I’ll deal with ‘em sorely. We have a blast when we’re on board and we are happy not to have to go through all the rigmarole of the regular scheduled flights. It is the best way to travel.
Well we have been doing some great shows over the weeks and I have been overwhelmed with the response at a lot of them.
After the Dallas show which was amazing by the way. Nick, Steve, Jeff and meself flew in the Goose down to San Antonio. The flight took a little over 90 minutes, as we had to fly around a few storm cells. After we arrived Pam, my friend Don Zamora’s daughter in law, met us with one of Tapatio Springs resort vans. We drove to the resort via a stop off at a Whataburger.
‘Kin amazing the size of these burgers, could feed at least three people. None of us could finish the things. So while we were travelling I had this really urgent need for a big pump, [that’s passing wind boys and girls] but I couldn’t do it in front of Pam, well it wasn’t my turn, Teehee. So I held it in.
Well when we arrived at the resort we were out side the reception and Pam got out of the van I thought that she had gone into the office to get the keys or something. So I’ve slipped over and opened the side door rather swiftly. I stepped outside the van and turned around looking in and let a ‘Kin massive ripper go. At which Jeff then said ‘Nick, Pam is standing right behind you’.
I turned around and he was right. There she was holding the door of the van like not a foot away behind me. Man was I ever so embarrassed.
She just laughed and all was OK. Nick and Jeff were in tears as I’m sure Pam was but for a different reason. Nick said that he couldn’t believe that I would do such I thing but honest I didn’t know she was standing there.
After we checked in, we all went to bed. It was around 3 in the morning and we had a golf game scheduled for that morning. You guys may remember that I stayed out here on the last tour and wrote about it in me diary then. It is a wonderful resort with 27 holes of golf, a spa and tennis courts, and a great restaurant. My friend Jay Parker owns the resort and was looking forward to having us stay with him. My very dear friend Don [the Z man] Zamora still takes care of golf operations at the resort and was responsible for setting everything up. Thank you Don and Pam for all your love and help.
We got up at a little after ten and made our way down to the restaurant for a little late breakfast. After which we went and got ready for a few holes of golf. Nick decided that he would like to play and so there were the three of us on the first tee. We played 30 holes of golf and had the best time ever. It was great to be playing with me son after so many years of him not wanting to play. When he was 6 years old I taught him to play and by the age of 12 he was getting really good. Then out of the blue he said he didn’t want to play anymore. Well man, does he hit it a long way when he gets it. We had a blast.
That evening we had dinner with Jay and his lovely wife Lynette and their 4-month-old beautiful baby boy, Preston. He’s adorable. He has so much hair for a young un. I’ve never seen so much hair on a wee one like he has.
H also was with us. He arrived around 2 o'clock that afternoon. H likes to fish and there’s great fishing to be had at Tapatio. We had a wonderful meal and a couple of bottles of great Farniente wine. We hit the sack a little after midnight and all got up at around 10 the next morning. We made our way to the clubhouse and had a light breakfast before doing battle with the next 27 holes I was in heaven. I’m with me best mate and my son playing a most wonderful golf course. Thank you Lord for such wonderful blessings.
That evening we played at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre. We left Tapatio at a little after 6 o'clock and met a few of Dons guests at a stop off on the way. We had a blast at the show. There were a lot of our friends there and instead of doing a runner we all stayed behind and had a few libations.
I came back with Jay, Lynette, Nick, Jeff and Joey. Joey is Jeff’s stepdaughters husband. He joined us for golf that afternoon. They had had a lot more to drink than Jay and meself and had to be told off for being too close to the edge on a few occasions. When we arrived at the resort we had a small party outside me room. It was a great evening. Jeff crashed out as soon as we arrived and the rest of us carried on drinking and chatting away until around 2:30am. After we said our goodnights we all went to bed.
The next day we got up and made our way over to the clubhouse. After a coffee or three we met Jay and went and played nine holes of golf before we had to leave for Houston. We were meeting Bruce and Steve and flying the Goose up to Houston as we had a show there that evening. We met at the FBO and were airborne at around 4 in the afternoon. Went straight to the show and met with Debbie, Jeff's misses. The gig was blinding and after we had a few bevies and then headed back to Jeff’s home. Nick and I were staying with them for the next 2 nights. We planned to go golfing on the next day as it was a day off but I wasn’t feeling up to it. I got up at 10:30 and made me way over to a wee church that was just round the corner from Jeff’s place. I got back at a little after midday and we decided to go visit Jeff’s store in Pasadena. He has the most amazing store that I’ve ever been in. If you ever get too Pasadena go visit Jeff’s store its called Puff and Stuff.
Well we stayed there for a good hour and then went for lunch at one of me favourite restaurants in Houston called Pappas. It is a seafood restaurant. Lovely.
We left there at 4o-clock and Nick wanted to go ride some go carts so we went to a track just up the road from hobby airport. We played some video games and rode the carts and then headed home. We settled in and Nick played on Jeff’s computer while Jeff and I watched a couple of movies. Jeff made some wicked chicken wings which we bought while we were on the hunt for some crispy cream donuts. We found some in Kroger’s store of the stars, and also decided to pick up some wings. We had a nice snack dinner. It was wonderful to be with me mate. Debbie, bless her, left the two of us on our own to watch the movies. I was feeling very happy and relaxed.
The next morning Debbie drove Nick and meself over to Hobby airport. Jeff had a doctor’s appointment and so after we said toodle oohh to each other she drove us and had us there just before 12.
The rest of the boys, H, Davey, Jan, Gaddzy and Ian were a little late arriving. We were flying on the Maiden Express as Bruce and Steve went back to San Antonio after the Houston show with the Goose. We were airborne and on our way by 1:30pm. The flight was around 3 1/2 hours with a fuel stop. We arrived into El Paso Marriott airport hotel at a little after 4. Nick and I went for a bit to eat. I went and had a wee siesta after dinner and met the guys in the lobby ay 8. We went to the show and had one of the best gigs these last few weeks. It was indoors at the Don Haskins Centre, and it was a ‘Kin great crowd and we played right on the money. Thank you El Paso. You were HOT!!!!
After the gig we went back to the hotel and I had an early night.
The next day we were supposed to have off in El Paso, but the general feeling was that we wanted to go to Denver. Ian had spoken with the travel agent, Amy, and she arranged for all the hotel changes. We left at 10am and made the journey to Denver. The next day [show day the 20th] Dave, Nick and meself went to the Omni Interlocken golf coarse for a round. The Z man had called a guy named Dana Smith whom then set us up with a tee time of 11:02. We made it in time and were thrilled that everything was comped. Thanks to all at the Omni, especially Dana. Thanks mate!!!
Today is another day off. I’m not too happy at this very moment that I’m finishing this diary [7:10pm] as I had to put Nick in a car at 8 o'clock and send him on his way to the airport to catch a plane back to Blighty. I have had the best time with him these last eight days and I feel very sad to be sitting here with him gone. It has been the best time for us together. I love you son and miss you terribly already.
Well that’s about it for now. The show last night was not one of our best but we really enjoyed it anyway. There were a few mistakes from yours truly and that always makes me feel as though I let the guys and you lot down. Oh well that happens from time to time, we just have to pick ourselves up and get back on top.
Well, that’s enough of me blabbering on and on boys and girls.
I’m off now
Love you all.
Stay safe and well.
God bless you all.
